Link Building

What is Dofollow Link?

Definition

A dofollow link (technically the default — there is no `rel='dofollow'` attribute) is a standard hyperlink that passes ranking authority from the linking page to the linked page. The term exists only in contrast to nofollow links. All links are dofollow by default unless `rel='nofollow'` is explicitly added.

Why Dofollow Link matters for Shopify stores

For link building, dofollow editorial mentions from relevant websites are the most valuable. For Shopify stores, this means product reviews on industry blogs, features in round-up articles, and citations in press coverage — all without the `rel='nofollow'` attribute.

Shopify example

A coffee equipment store is reviewed by a popular specialty coffee blog. The reviewer links to the product page naturally: `<a href='https://store.com/products/pour-over-kettle'>Precision Pour-Over Kettle</a>` — no rel attribute means dofollow, passing full ranking authority.

How Sauron handles Dofollow Link

Sauron's backlink exchange network only creates dofollow body-text links — inserted as 'Further reading' paragraphs in blog content, not footer widgets or comments which are typically nofollowed.

Common mistakes

  • Pursuing nofollow links from directories when editorial dofollow coverage is achievable
  • Not checking rel attributes when evaluating the value of a link opportunity
  • Adding rel='dofollow' to links — this attribute doesn't exist and is ignored
  • Treating all links equally regardless of follow status when measuring backlink portfolio
