What is Impressions?
Definition
In SEO, an impression is counted each time a user's search results page includes a link to your website, whether or not they click it. Google Search Console reports impressions alongside clicks and CTR. High impressions with low clicks indicate a ranking and visibility problem with meta copy or SERP position.
Why Impressions matters for Shopify stores
Impressions are the top of the SEO funnel. A Shopify store with 100,000 monthly impressions but a 1.5% CTR is converting only 1,500 clicks from all that visibility. Improving meta titles can double traffic from the same impression volume — the traffic was always there, just not being claimed.
Shopify example
GSC shows a product page has 24,000 monthly impressions for 'best protein powder' at average position 6.2 — but only 380 clicks (1.6% CTR). The meta title 'Protein Powder — NutritionCo' is generic. Rewriting to 'Best Whey Protein Powder — 82% Protein | NutritionCo' raises CTR to 3.4%, adding 432 monthly visitors.

- ✕ Celebrating high impressions without checking CTR — impressions without clicks have no value
- ✕ Not segmenting impressions by device — mobile and desktop have different CTR patterns
- ✕ Ignoring pages with thousands of impressions because they're not on page 1
- ✕ Confusing 'average position' with actual positions — average masks a range
