What is SERP Features?

Definition

SERP features are non-standard search result elements that appear alongside or instead of standard blue-link results — including featured snippets, knowledge panels, shopping results (PLAs), image packs, People Also Ask boxes, local packs, review stars, and video carousels. Each feature requires different optimisation approaches.

Why SERP Features matters for Shopify stores

For Shopify stores, two SERP features are highest priority: Product Listing Ads (PLAs) in shopping tabs (requiring Google Merchant Center integration) and review star rich results from Product schema. A product with 4.8 stars displayed in organic results has dramatically higher click-through rates than a bare blue link.

Shopify example

Searching 'buy cashmere scarf UK' shows: a shopping carousel (PLAs) at top, then organic results — some with star ratings from Product schema. A store appearing in both the shopping carousel AND having star ratings in organic results dominates the SERP visually.

How Sauron handles SERP Features

Sauron's schema markup feature adds structured data that enables SERP features — Product schema for review stars, FAQPage schema for People Also Ask appearances, and BreadcrumbList for cleaner URL display.

Common mistakes

  • Not adding review markup because you assume it requires a review platform
  • Using Product schema without Offer details — required for shopping SERP features
  • Not tracking which SERP features you already own for your keyword targets
  • Ignoring People Also Ask as a content opportunity — each PAA question is a targetable keyword
