How Sauron connects
This is a back-end integration — no setup required from merchants. Sauron's keyword research worker calls DataForSEO's API automatically when you run keyword research on a product or collection. Results are stored in Sauron's database and shown in your dashboard. Merchants on the Growth plan and above get access to full DataForSEO-powered keyword research.

You click 'Run Keyword Research' on a product or collection in Sauron.
Sauron's AI generates 10 candidate keyword phrases based on your product name, description, and brand voice.
All 10 candidates are sent to DataForSEO's Keywords Data API in a single batch request — fetching search volume, keyword difficulty, and CPC for each.
The keyword with the best volume-to-difficulty ratio is selected as the primary keyword. All data is stored in your KeywordCluster record.
DataForSEO's SERP API then fetches the top 5 ranking pages for the primary keyword. Their titles and descriptions are injected into the AI generation prompt for SERP-informed copy.

Do I need a DataForSEO account? +
No. Sauron's DataForSEO integration is fully managed — our API key is used for all requests on behalf of merchants. You don't need to create a DataForSEO account or pay DataForSEO separately.
How many keyword lookups does Sauron perform? +
Each keyword research run performs one batch API call with up to 10 keywords, plus one SERP lookup for the winning keyword. A store running keyword research on 100 products would use approximately 100 batch calls — all included within your Sauron subscription.
Is DataForSEO data accurate for non-US markets? +
Yes. DataForSEO supports 190+ countries and regional search volumes. Sauron automatically uses your store's primary market country for keyword volume lookups — so UK stores get UK search volumes, not US estimates.
What does 'DATAFORSEO_MOCK=true' mean in the logs? +
During development and testing, Sauron can run with mock DataForSEO data to avoid API costs. In production, all keyword research uses live DataForSEO data. If you see this in a production log, contact support — it means live data isn't being fetched.
